The Mirror of the Word

The Mirror of the Word

I often call myself a “Girl Interrupted” by the Holy Spirit. There are moments when I am going about my day, caught up in my own thoughts, when suddenly He interrupts me with something I know I need to hear.

The other day, I distinctly heard the Holy Spirit say to me,

“Don’t forget what you look like to Me. My Word is your mirror.” This scripture came to my mind-”For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.”  James 1:23-24 NLT

It was a tender rebuke, but it was also a call up from Him. He wasn’t condemning me. He was reminding me that I had been looking at myself through the wrong mirror. He was calling me up into obedience. He was calling me up into the Truth of His Word. His Word is the only mirror that gives me the perfect reflection of who I truly am.

I’ve been in a season of what I call the “Broken Record Condition.” I have had a “stuck needle,” and the lines on my “record” have been skipping, repeating the same old things, the same old thoughts, and even things I thought I had already overcome.

Throughout my walk with Jesus, there have been many seasons of this “Broken Record Condition”. I get filled up with His Word, His thoughts, and His love toward me. I see myself clearly in the mirror of His Word. I remember what He has spoken, what He has promised, and who He says I am.

And then somehow, I walk away from the mirror and forget.

The needle becomes stuck again, and I find myself reeling in my stinking thinking. The same thoughts begin playing over and over. Hope becomes deferred, vision becomes blurred, and the music of my life begins to sound off-key. Instead of hearing the song of His heart over me, I begin listening to the broken record of my own thoughts, disappointments, fears, and circumstances. I forgot…

I am so grateful that He interrupted my thoughts and whispered to me, “Don’t forget.”

That one interruption and whisper from Him began wooing me back to His Presence-back to His Word, back to the correct mirror, and back to remembering. He reminded me of who the Godhead is, and then He reminded me of who I am in Him and Whose I am.

His Word corrects the distorted reflection of who I am..

God’s Word truly is a mirror that shows me the truth of who I am. It doesn't just reveal what needs to change; it reminds me of what He has already spoken. His Word shows me how to unstick the needle, renew the lines of my record, and begin hearing again the beautiful song of His heart for my life.

The LORD your God is among you; He is mighty to save. He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you with His love; He will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17 NLT

Wow! What a beautiful promise from scripture!

Maybe seasons are like that sometimes. We can become so focused on everything that is changing around us that we lose sight of what has never changed. Him!

Have you found yourself here?

Are you in a season of the “Broken Record Condition”, where the needle seems stuck and the same thoughts keep playing over and over?

Go back to the mirror of His Word.

Look again. Listen again. Let the Holy Spirit remind you of who He is, who you are in Him, and Whose you are. Allow Him to lift the needle from the old record and place it upon the song He has been singing over your life all along.

Even when the season looks different and the things around us feel unfamiliar, He remains the same. The scenery may change, but the One who holds us does not.

God has not changed. His Word remains true. His love toward us is steadfast. And who we are in Him remains secure.

How do we unstick the needle? How do we come out of our Broken Record Condition?

“We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.” Hebrews 12:2 NLT

Don’t forget what you look like to Him. You are a beautiful reflection of Him!

When the broken record begins to play again, when old thoughts try to tell you who you are, go back to the mirror of His Word. Look again. Let His Word remind you of what He sees when He looks at you.

You are His beloved. You are being renewed and transformed into His image. You are not defined by the reflection of your past, your mistakes, or the voices around you. His Word is the mirror that tells you the truth.

So, don’t walk away and forget what you look like. Linger there for a moment. Look into His Word and remember…

You belong to Him. You reflect Him. And you are a beautiful reflection of the One who created you.

Blessings!
