The Words You Speak Have Power

Words We Speak To Ourselves

I wrote a blog a while back about how our words have incredible power. They carry the power of life and death in them and can make a difference in other people’s lives–positively or negatively.

I talked about how our words can open up a situation, calm fears, open hearts, and make people feel loved for who they are. However, our words can also burst someone’s bubble, wreck someone’s day, crush someone’s dream, or hurt or wound someone’s heart.

Then I started thinking about my own words to myself and how my own self-talk has a HUGE impact on me, myself, and I—positively or negatively.

Proverbs 18:21 says Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and we will eat its fruit—and believe me, I have! And the result, I must say, has not always been pretty. Why? Because my words to myself have not always been positive. In fact, they have been mostly negative for the majority of my life.

Our thoughts turn into our words, which can create emotions. Our words then turn into our actions, and our actions become us—we act out what we think about.

The enemy’s favorite way to “get us” is to “plant” thoughts in our mind contrary to what God’s Word says. This is why it is sooo important to KNOW God’s Word—Jesus did. In the desert, when Jesus was tempted by Satan, all Jesus had to say was, “It is written. . .” (Take that, you slimmy enemy! Thinking you are all that and a bag of chips!)

I would say that many times, I have “helped the enemy along” by “grabbing” a small thought, dwelling on it, and allowing it to get bigger and bigGER and BIGGER—the whole mountain out of a molehill thing—and in a short amount of time I am able to kill myself with my words. Kill my mood,  my joy,  my peace, all while creating things with my words to myself, like stress, anxiety, frustration, anger. . . need I go on?

Why do I allow myself to get caught in this cycle? There are two main reasons, I’d say.

  • I didn’t always know what the Word said—my fault.
  • If I knew what the Word said,  I chose not to apply it to myself, mostly because I allowed my emotions to speak louder than God’s Word— again,  my fault.

It was time to start speaking life to myself—and say it aloud. Why speak it aloud? It changes the spirit realm and puts the enemy on notice.

With each positive word I spoke to myself, my mindset changed. Yes, it was hard at first, mainly because I was in the habit of speaking to myself negatively, but with each positive word, it became easier and easier. As my words became more positive about myself,  so did my feelings—win-win.

The Bible tells us to take every thought captive that does not align with the Word of God. How do we know if it does? We get into the Bible and let it get into us—AKA, renewing our minds—which is a whole other blog. Right now, it is time for me to get into God’s Word, know what He says, and speak it out loud. It is always positive. God never condemns. The enemy does that, and I am pretty tired of helping the enemy out! How about you?

Blessings!!
