Unplug Your Wells!

When Isaac came back to the land that had belonged to his father, Abraham, he found the wells he had dug had been closed up by the Philistines. Isaac came back for the express purpose of reopening those wells.

Genesis 25:11 – After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac, who then lived near Beer Lahai Roi.

Genesis 26: 18-25 – 18 Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.

19 Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there.20 But the herders of Gerar quarreled with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!” So he named the well Esek, because they disputed with him. 21 Then they dug another well, but they quarreled over that one also; so he named it Sitnah. 22 He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth, saying, “Now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in the land.”

23 From there he went up to Beersheba. 24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.”

25 Isaac built an altar there and called on the name of the Lord. There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.

26 Meanwhile, Abimelek had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces. 27 Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?”

28 They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you; so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty with you 29 that you will do us no harm, just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.”

30 Isaac then made a feast for them, and they ate and drank. 31 Early the next morning the men swore an oath to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.

32 That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!” 33 He called it Shibah, and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.

The first well, Esek: JEALOUSY will consume and destroy us

Jealousy can be subtle. It sneaks in and you find yourself quarreling with people you never had a problem with before. Why? Usually it stems back to jealousy.

The second well, Sitnah: ACCUSATION comes to steal your provision

After the second well was contested, it was clear that they were not worried about the water. It was Isaac’s fame that they deplored.

The third well, Rehoboth: ROOM ENOUGH perseverance produces fruit, and fruit produces peace

The Lord made room for Isaac and his people. Finally, they had provision. They persevered and were able to enjoy the fruit of their labors. God brought them peace from their strife.

The fourth well, OATH/SEVEN completion and overflow, abundance

The last well was uncontested because Isaac acted instead of reacting. It can be easy to fall into reacting when we are plagued by fear. We need to see what God is doing, especially in this time, so that we can act when we are called upon, instead of reacting in fear.

We also encounter wells in the spirit. Places where God’s spirit has moved and many of them have been plugged over the years. We believe that God is getting ready, and preparing us, to reopen those wells! If a well is stopped up, it can’t do what it was originally created to do. It doesn’t mean the water is gone necessarily, it just means that it no longer has a flow. We have to dig down deeper to get to the water.

Many of you may feel like plugged up wells. Now is the time to dig deep. That perseverance will produce fruit in time. Stir up the gifts inside of you. Dig into the things of God so that He can bring refreshing to those dry places.

Unplugging your wells is not about keeping your schedule. It’s about coming into alignment with His presence. It’s about reprioritizing things that have been put aside. It’s time to slow down, because we literally have no other choice at the moment. We have a perfect opportunity as we are being quarantined to take time to be with Him and really listen to what He is saying. What a beautiful opportunity to lay down the things that make us busy, but should not be our focus in this season. We need to allow Him to lead our days, our schedule, our mindsets and our emotions. This time of ‘interruption’ can be a great opportunity to lean deeper into the things of the Lord. We need to put Him first and foremost in our lives.

This is also a time to lean in and inquire from the heart and mind of our Father. Incline your ear. When we incline we may feel a little off-balance because we are leaning in so far, but as we feel off-balance he brings to us the scale from heaven so we realign with what the truth is. We can either view this time as isolation or solitude. Just because we have to socially distance ourselves does not mean that we cannot be about the Father’s business. Use this time as a preparation period, to dig deep into the Word and prayer, to lean into your relationship with Jesus. He is pouring out His spirit like never before. It’s not time for a ‘vacation’, rather we are in a season of protection, a cocoon, and when we come out we need to be ready to do what God has prepared us to do!
